Formation Of The Team


2005 

  • SimDragons was formed in July 2005 by then President of the Club Cao Yue Ming from RMIT.
  • First Recruitment Drive in August for UOL students. This is where the pioneer batch of SimDragons were recruited and an EXCO was officially formed.
  • Second Recruitment Drive was held in September at SIM Students' Week. This is where the bulk of our rowers were recruited.
  • Official Launch of SimDragons.com portal and our first training singlet and team T-shirt was held at East Coast Park on 12 November.
  •  Our very first exposure race was during the 23rd River Regatta Race in November, which we represented Safra DragonBoat team as SIM was still a non-affiliate of the SDBA.

2006

  • Our First Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held in February. An election of the new EXCO for the year was witnessed. Gavin She and Angline Ong were elected the president and vice-president then.
  • Our Vision: "Excel as a Team, Forge Ahead as One" was promulgated by the new EXCO in February 2006.
  • Since then, we trained hard, and represented SIM at the MR500 race in March.
  • On 13 March, a statement made by the SDBA annouced that SIM was invited to challenge at the Prestigious 'Prime Minister Cup' Race held annually at the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival in June. The PM Cup was initially partciparted by only the 2 local universities, NUS and NTU, a replica of the 'Oxford-Cambridge' dragonboat race in the UK, but revised by the SDBA to include the SMU and SIM, when the SIM was announced the fourth university in Singapore.
  • SimDragons was officially affiliated with the SDBA on 1st April 2006.
  • The team represented SIM at our First overseas Race in Penang on 18 December acheiving an overall Bronze trophy.

2007

  • The baton was handed over to Aaron Ang and Agnes Chia who were elected the president and vice-president for 2007.
  • The mens' team acheived its first IVP silver medal at the Singapore Dragonboat Festival 2007 under the coaching of Terence Ong.
  • Once again the team participated in the Penang Pesta Dragon Boat Race 2007 acheiving 1 Silver and 2 Bronze Trophy.

2008

  • AGM 2008 was held on 4 January, where Muhd. Mazni and Jocelyn Loke were elected as the Captain for the Mens and Ladies teams respectively.
  • Veteran and Coach, Mr Ng Sin Teck, was officially appointed the new coach for the team in January.
  • The team was sponsored a new Seagull Dragon Boat by SIM in March.
  • SIM won Silver for Tertiary Mens and Bronze for Tertiary Mixed, PM Cup Mens and PM Cup Womens in Singapore Dragonboat Festival 2008.
  • For the first time, SIM qualify for both Tertiary Mens Final and National Championship Mens Grand Final for 26th River Regatta.
  • Another milestone where SIM won 1 bronze, 2 silver and 1 gold for Penang Pesta 2008.
  • New SIMDragons logo was created.
  • The team was sponsored Trivium carbon fibre paddles by SIM in November.

2009
  • AGM 2009 was held on 6 January, where Han Delong and Chiam Li Ping were elected as the Captain for Mens and Ladies team respectively.

    What We Represent

    SIM Dragons are the enthusiastic, spirited and sportive dragonboaters from the Singapore Institute of Management. We have a common passion - to row like our lives depended on it. Based on our principle of "Train hard! Study hard! Play hard!", the SIM Dragon Boat Team attempts to promote the holistic development of any individual throughout his/her tertiary education, by promoting key traits like strong mental strength and close social bonds. Unity is the key to our success! It is through such team spiritedness that has brought us closer and helped forged the many invaluable friendships.

    Our vision "Excel As A Team, Forge Ahead As One" attests to our pursuit to be a highly competitive team. We challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones, be physically and mentally competent, and contest for the opportunity to represent the team in races.

    Today, the SIM Dragons comprises of more than 40 members and growing, and we are constantly on the look out for more new members to boost our stand in the dragonboat arena. By far, the team has witnessed several races both local and overseas.

    There are mainly 5 races a year:

    2) Singapore Dragon Boat Festival - June
    3) Sava Sprints - September
    4) Singaopre River Regatta - November
    5) Penang Pesta Dragon Boat Race - December
    6) Master Series

    All training and no play maketh a dull team, and having fun is about what we do best! The team enjoys bonding activities like clubbing, celebrating of festive seasons, movie marathons, chilling out, sun-tanning sessions at Sentosa, and more!

    Recruitment is thrice a year, January July and September. However, we may recruit on a case by case basis. All interested applicant must be a student or member of SIM.
